Project Grant

City of Beatrice for the acquisition of up to 8 flood-prone residential and 6 commercial structures in the Big Blue floodplain/floodway. This project is being supplemented by Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funds through the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency. Beatrice has since become Nebraska's first Project Impact community.

Planning Grant

To the Nebraska Natural Resources Commission for the costs associated with starting-up the FMA Program in Nebraska and to develop a State Flood Mitigation Plan.

Planning Grant

City of Superior to assess and identify the flood risk from Lost Creek, Republican River, unnamed tributary through middle of town, and Blakely/Oak Creeks. Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds were made available by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development to supplement the FMA Planning Grant funds for such an extensive study. Superior has since become Nebraska's second Project Impact community.

City of Superior. To complete one reach of bank stabilization along Lost Creek as identified in the flood mitigation plan. In-kind services from the Nuckolls County Highway Department will be used to provide the 25% non-federal match.

Planning Grant

City of Fort Calhoun. On August 5-6, 1999, ten inches of rain fell in the Fort Calhoun area in less than 24 hours. Not only was the large amount of rainfall causing problems, but the bluffs on the western boundary of the City created a flash flood event which highlighted existing drainage problems. This flood mitigation planning initiative was fortunate in terms of timing because the City had already contracted with an engineering firm for a drainage study. The drainage and flood planning studies will dovetail together.

Project Grant


Most of these funds will be used to supplement the 1997 FMA Project Grant for Beatrice, and will be used to acquire and demolish more residences in the Big Blue River floodplain. The remaining portion of these funds is being used to acquire and demolish a residence in Fort Calhoun which was substantially damaged as a result of the flood event from August, 1999.

Planning Grant

City of North Platte. North Platte has 25% of Nebraska's flood insurance policies. The North Platte Flood Insurance Rate Map is also more than 20 years old and needs to be rechecked. With the funding assistance of North Platte's Economic Development Fund and in-kind services provided by Lincoln County Department of Roads, this plan will be the largest and most significant flood mitigation plan undertaken by the NDNR by far. The goal is to determine if some areas which are correct when they are currently shown as being in the floodplain. In addition, the planning document will be directly inserted into the City's Comprehensive Plan which is currently underway. The NDNR is also working directly with the City in developing a new, more effective and revamped floodplain management ordinance.

Project Grant

A portion of this grant will be used to pay the remaining portion of the Fort Calhoun acquisition. Beatrice will receive funds for the acquisition of one additional residence. Some project funds remain to be obligated.
